We are not allowed to say this was a "significant birthday" but it was, and even Rod enjoyed the party.

Happy Birthday Rod from all your friends and admiring rock hounds.

The sign in the driveway has been taken down now but the sentiments remain. (Henry was to blame for that). Thanks Henry.

We received emal greetings from Jennifer Miller Creagh and others too numerous to list.

Rod, take care of those two bottled reds, but dont leave them alone for too long either. If you need a help ......

When I was in Melbourne recently, I visited the Royal Society of Victoria and there in the member's Reading Room was a copy of a recent publication from the Royal Society of Western Australia entitled:

Symposium on Kimberley Marine and Coastal Science

This 420 page scientific treatise is the Proceedings of a joint RSWA/WAMSI Symposium held in May 2011 and covers topics as wide as heritage, geology, landscapes, beach and barrier systems, coastal vegetation, fish and marine ecosystems, ecology and conservation issues.

I have ordered several copies for the Gallery. The RRP is $65.00

Sid and Skipper go mustering

This is uncanny.
I logged on to the computer on Tuesday night to post a photo of Cadbury our kelpie dog who had just gone to heaven after dogging me for 18 years, and was met by this email from Backroom Press Inc, a small publishing company in Broome announcing the release of a new book about two Kimberley Kelpies, Sid and Skipper, who go mustering and face a dramatic challenge.

I placed an order for 20 copies and they are proving popular.

Pretty soon, in February I hope, I will have another kelpie to keep me company at the Gallery. Perhaps a rescue dog from Australian Working Dog Rescue Inc. Watch this spot.

Bruce returned from Broome last month where he visited Johan Pas, naturalist and shell collector. As a result we have 9 new shells on display including a famed "Broome Blue" cowrie. The other 8 shells are Conus (cone shells).

On Sunday evening, 25 September, from 5:00pm, Nkandu Beltz, Freelance Journalist/Newswriter, Kununurra, is holding the next in her series of Cultural Nights at Zebra Rock Gallery. You are encouraged to bring a plate of food to share representing your own culture. We will be fundraising throughout the evening, whilst sharing our meals and culture with each other. We are calling upon local businesses to help us with this cause by donating whatever they can to auction or raffle during the evening. All funds raised will be donated to Save the Children – who are heavily involved, in the field, in providing emergency relief to the children of East Africa who are currently facing severe hardship and starvation due a prolonged drought. September 11

On September 11, Olive Knight, Indigenous Rhythm and Blues Singer/Songwriter will be singing live at Zebra Rock Gallery 5pm-7pm. One performance only. Entry: $20 adult; $50 family (up to 4 children) ; $10 child (over 6y). Book now 08 9168 1114 or at the door on the night.

Olive recently completed her debut album "Gospel Blues at the Edge of the Desert" earlier this year, before embarking on her first international role in a musical with Hollywood man, Hugh Jackman, in Toronto, Canada. She received ovations for her rendition of "Somewhere over the Rainbow"in her language Walmatjarri.

Stalagmites from Ning Bing range, WA inform about cyclones

Zebra Rock Gallery was visited by researchers from Cornell College, Iowa, USA who are researching stalagmites (Speleothem) from Western Australia for what they can tell us about tropical cyclones. It appears that the deposition of mud in the stalagmites is related to flooding of caves during tropical cyclones.

The pattern of mud deposited can give information about the occurrence of tropical cyclones over time. Dr. Rhawn Denniston and two undergraduate students together with John Cugley from the Cave Exploration Group, WA visited our workshop today and were assisted by William Nunn, Rod Creagh and Colin Hackett to slice the collected stalagmites in half longitudinally. One of the two sections will be sent to the WA Museum (as a specimen) and the other to the USA for mineral analysis.

Further specimens will be collected from Windjana Gorge and other sites in WA. The results to be published in scientific peer-reviewed geology journals will hopefully correlate with the fossil and geophysical records and may also be predictive of future tropical cyclones.

PIANO RECITAL and DINNER

We are fortunate to have Irina from Cappuccino Concerts visit Kununurra this August. We look forward to her piano recital of popular classics.

Program includes J.S. Bach, Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue; F. Chopin, Andante spianato and Grande Polonaise, Op.22; Nocturne in C#-, Op. Posth; and R. Schumann, Carnival Op.9. Program notes on the night. The one hour concert will be followed by a 2-course dinner.

Irina is an accomplished pianist, classically trained in Moscow and Ukraine. In 2003 she migrated to Australia where she completed her musical education at the University of Western Australia.

Irina has participated in various festivals, international masterclasses and chamber music projects, and is also highly involved in the education and outreach of classical music. Tamworth duo me 'n' im

Graham and Lance are two professional musicians who have been around the music scene for many years. We are fortunate in having them perform at The Rock following their gigs at El Questro and Emma Gorge.

The duo calls themselves me 'n' im. The style of their music is quite varied within the genres of County and also some rock (50'sthrough to the 70's), however the overall tempo and sets used can be varied on the run to "hold" the audience.

So come on out on Thursday 18 August and enjoy a BBQ under the stars by the upper Ord while Graham and Lance keep you entertained with some great music.

Charge for the night is only $20 adults and $50 for the family. BYO chairs and drinks. Sausages and salads will be available to purchase at the venue or you can bring your own nosh. Either way, we look forward to welcoming you on the night.
