To begin the New Year of 2013, I have added a NEW PAGE to the Zebra Rock Gallery web site ( http://www.zebrarock.biz.). You will find the new page here
The new page is called Geology: did you know? It provides information about the geological nature, location and age of Zebra Rock.
Some of the important facts about this unique and ancient sedimentary rock are:
The Bottom Line: Zebra Rock consists of a fine grained siliceous argilite (indurated siltstone or claystone) with rhythmic patterns of red bands or spots contrasting sharply with a lighter background. It is not known how the regular patterns were formed but the red stripes are coloured ferric (iron) oxide.
You can download a detailed information sheet about the rock by clicking here
The Origin of Zebra Rock: Geologists have investigated Zebra Rock without producing any agreed consensus as to its origin. Click on [1 and 2] to read two scientific publications dealing with the origin of zebra rock
We hope you are as enthused as us about the unique zebra rock.
The rocks unsurpassed natural beauty typifies the colour and spirit of Australia.
